Sep. 1st, 2020 12:44 amEveryone knows the much bemoaned story of Cry for Justice and how Lian Harper died at the age of six years old. What nobody but a select few know was just how far her mother’s madness extended or the depths Cheshire would sink to bring back her child. Striking a bargain with the devil himself, Ra’s al Ghul, Cheshire sold herself and her child’s future to the League of Assassins. In exchange, Ra’s allowed Cheshire access to his Lazarus Pits.
Being exposed to the toxic materials broke something inside of Lian Harper and in an attempt to protect her own mind; she repressed nearly everything from her life before. Finding herself with an empty slate to impress her image upon, Jade raised Lian in secret. Since Roy and his merry band of ‘superheroes’ hadn’t been able to save her daughter, she swore to raise Lian correctly this time around.
As anyone sane can tell you however, letting a psychopath raise a child is a terrible idea. Cheshire did the best she could to give her daughter the necessary skills she’d need to survive, she trained her to be an assassin just as she herself had been trained. No longer would some second-rate villain kill the flesh and blood of one of the world’s most infamous assassins. Over the decade and a half, she hid Lian away deep in the countryside of third-world countries and for the most part, the assassin known as Cheshire dropped off the map. Instead, she invested her time and effort into teaching Lian every dirty trick and technique she knew. She sculpted the girl into an almost mirror image of her own morally bankrupt self. Ra’s al Ghul hadn’t forgotten about the bargain he and Jade made however. Lian Nguyen as she was now known was a long-term investment and eventually, he called in his chit with Jade.
Ra’s wanted proof that the girl was not only as good as her mother but that she could in fact eclipse Cheshire. Threatening the girl’s life, he ordered Jade to put her daughter to the final test by attacking her own flesh and blood in an all out battle. Jade had decades of experience on her side but she was older, slower and in the end, didn’t want to lose the fight and kill her own child. Instead, it was Lian who came out victorious and the price of that victory was her mother’s life.
And with the careful machinations of one of the world’s most subtle hands, a new Cheshire was born. The young woman hardly bears any resemblance to the happy girl she’d once been. Her dreams are haunted by images of a life she’s never known and it was only after her mother’s death that she finally started to pry into her own past. The knowledge she gained was hardly satisfying however. Learning that her father was a washed-up ex-superhero offended the young assassin. But the longer she dwelled on matters, the easier it has become to hate Roy Harper. And now, as a fully-fledged killer in her own right, Cheshire has set out to make her own mark on the world.
